COOKHOUSE LEARNERS GET CREATIVE FOR WIND POWER AND WIND PRIZE

Cookhouse Primary learners joined the world’s clean wind energy celebration by putting their creative skills to work in a schools art competition, initiated and sponsored by Cookhouse Wind Farm.

The young learners in Grade 4 to Grade 7 partook in a creative arts poster competition to celebrate Global Wind Day 2018. Learners’ creative skills were put to the test whereby each participating group was requested to design an A2 size poster announcing the celebration of this annual event. This is the first time that these young learners got to participate in this event, which is fast becoming as popular in South Africa as in other places across the globe.

Judges, which included Mr. Tsepo Kwatsha, Local Councillor from the Blue Crane Route Municipality, considered the creativity in the design and layout of the poster, as well as the effective use to illustrate wind power information as key criteria in this competition.

The first prize went to Nkosiyathando Mvovo, Athenkosi Oerson, Ntando Solomon, Yonelwa Ngwenze, Phumlazi Mselana, the Grade 7 group. The prizes, which were given to the school, included a Laptop Computer, Data Projector and a Projector Screen, all much needed equipment.

“We were very impressed with the learners’ creativity and all the thought that went into their Global Wind Day posters, which demonstrated their understanding and interpretation of how wind is used to produce clean, sustainable energy,” said Elton Gordon, Special Projects Manager for Cookhouse Wind Farm.

Global Wind Day is a worldwide event that occurs annually on 15 June. It is a day for discovering wind, its power and the possibilities it holds to change our world. In more than 80 countries worldwide, wind farms are in operation, generating energy from a clean and renewable source.
